Autumn Light: The Story of a Commission

I’m delighted to have one of my big 7-foot commissions back on loan to me for a few months, while the owners get their home refurbished. Have a sneak peak of their painting while I’ve still got it!

Storms over Eggardon Hill

Oil on canvas. 180x60cm

This commission was a present from husband to wife to celebrate a significant birthday in their new home.

The couple were fully in the process of refurbishment and they wanted to create a ‘snug’ where they could feel cosy over the winter months. They both liked the idea of a ‘stormy’ painting to make them feel the warmth of home while the winds, rain & snow raged outside.

I painted this with oil on a fine-weave linen so that I could capture all the intricacies of the mists in the valleys below the storms.

“Your painting is now a cherished part of our home. We can’t imagine living without it!“ Claire & Steve

Bluebell path on Lewesdon Hill

Oil on flax. 100x40cm.

Sometimes, my art is about pure joy and the uplifting spirit of Nature. For a client who loved bright, vibrant scenes, the bluebells on Lewesdon Hill were the perfect muse.

I knew this place well, and my own delight in painting it was reflected in every brushstroke. Working on rough flax, I embraced the texture, the impasto, and the vivid collours, capturing not just a view but the lively energy of Spring.

This approach let me bring the scene to life in a way that felt fresh, spontaneous, and true to the spirit of the place.

“My second commission brings light and springtime into my home!” Penny

Winding path up Lewesdon Hill

Oil on canvas. 76x51cm.

For another client, the gentle contours of Lewesdon Hill offered a different kind of inspiration. Together, we explored my sketches and collages until one piece - a surreal reimagining of the hill - sparked her imagination.

Altering the season, shifting the light, I let the painting unfold as a blend of reality & dream, driven by my own intuition and her emotional resonance with my art.

The result was a landscape that felt both familiar & fantastical, a Vision that resonated deeply because it honored our shared connection while remaining true to my own creative journey.

“Your painting brings me such joy every day!“ Caroline

The view from Bulbarrow Hill

Oil on canvas. 92x36cm.

This commission took me back to the valley below Bulbarrow Hill, a place filled with childhood memories for both my client and myself.

In my conversations with my client, it became clear that this landscape held a powerful emotional resonance. As I revisited the ancient hill fort, watching the skies, sketching & taking photos, I sought to capture not just the scene but the feeling of being there - the quiet, the light, the air.

Back in the studio, I intuitively pieced together these elements, merging my own sense of place with my client’s emotional connection, allowing the painting to evolve into something truly alive and deeply personal.

“This view is so filled with happy memories from my childood'.“ Heather

A view near Whitchurch Canonicorum

Oil on canvas. 92x36cm.

When a client asked me to paint a view near her home in West Dorset as a gift for her son, our conversations uncovered a deeper need - a desire to capture the essence of home, something timeless & deeply comforting.

Because of dull weather, I had to wait several weeks before discovering my moment of inspiration. By that time I had found the perfect view close to her house: a vista rich with personal history & meaning. As I painted, I allowed the landscape to guide me, responding to the changing light & atmosphere until the painting felt complete.

It became more than a painting; it was an invitation to her son to stay feel connected, a way to carry the warmth of home wherever life might lead him.

“My son now has a beautiful reminder of his childhood, inspiring him in the city, every day.” Gillian
